Donna Nook, on the Lincolnshire coast, is home to a large breeding colony of Grey Seals, which come ashore in November to have their pups. By early December the colony is usually well into the middle of it's pupping season, with small fluffy white seal pups scattered everywhere.
During this time most of the pregnant females congregate in the roped off sanctuary area, where you can see a great number of seals and pups from the foot path that runs along the landward edge of the sanctuary. However some of the seals prefer to have their pups out on the sand bar several hundred yards out towards the sea, which is where the best photo opportunities are to be had, as you can get close to them and better still crouch/lie down and photograph them at eye level.
The day will start at 9am in the car park with a safety briefing, afterwhich we will walk out to the sandbar. Please note that this is a walk of around a kilometre, part of which is through very slippery wet mud, and that once out on the sand bar you are at the mercy of the elements. We strongly suggest that you wear breathable water proof clothing, waterproof footwear and most importantly some water/sandproof storage for cameras. We also recommend that you buy a waterproof rain cover and tape it to camera and lenses to prevent moisture and especially sand getting into your camera. We like the cheap (around £5 for 2) Optech Rainsleeve, but use tape (we like gaffer tape) to secure the sleeve to the camera to make it sand proof. You will also need to bring your own food and drink.
Once out on the sandbar you are free to roam as you please, and we will be on hand to offer any help and advice that might make your day more enjoyable.
Please note that due to the nature of this day, we will run the day regardless of weather conditions, and no alternative date will be arranged.
