Tutorial: Saving Images

Photoshop has two basic ways of saving your image, either the "Save As" command, or the "Save For Web" command.

Save As

So you have an image ready to be saved.

Click on File, and select Save As

Which will open the Save As window. Choose the folder to save the image file in, here we have selected a folder called "images", and made the file name "corfe castle dawn". Select the format you wish to save the image as, here we have selected to save it as a Tiff file. When you click the Save button the Tiff Options window appears.

We have given it no compression so the image stays exactly the way it is, then click OK. Tiff files are "lossless" in that none of the image information is lost. This means bigger file sizes, but no loss of quality each time you use "Save As".

If you were to select save as a Jpeg.

Select Jpeg from the Save As list.

Which will open the Jpeg Options Window. Here we have moved the quality slider down to level 10, which in this case gives us a file size of 45.95K. Jpeg files are generally smaller then Tiff files, although to achieve this some of the image information is discarded. The Jpeg quality slider dictates how much information is lost, so at maximum quality (12) not much would be lost, and the image file size would be quite high, where as at the minimum quality (zero) ... much of the image information would be discarded, resulting in a very low quality image but a small file size. These reduced file sizes make Jpegs ideal for internet use, or for emailing to people. Each time you use "Save As" a Jpeg a little more of the file information is lost, resulting in a progressive loss of quality.

Next we will have a look at "Save For Web"
